Praying Through the Preamble

As believers, we are citizens of a heavenly city,
but while we are yet living in this land, let us pray for our nation.

We the people of the United States
(Psalm 133:1)
Pray for unity in our nation. “We” are a collective. God, help us to show respect and honor to one another even in our differences.
In order to form a more perfect union
(Galatians 3:28)
Pray for “a more perfect union” – continuing improvements with regards to social ills like human trafficking, hunger and homelessness.
Establish justice
(Micah 6:8)
Pray for biblical justice to rule in our land as determined by the unchanging Word of God – our only stable, dependable source.
Insure domestic tranquility
(John 14:27)
Pray for police and first responders. For renewed confidence and trust in God. That His peace would dwell in the hearts of men, women and children everywhere. That we would not live troubled or afraid.
Provide for the common defense
(2 Samuel 22:2-4)
Pray for homeland security, for our military (all branches and their leaders) – that we would be safe in our homes, communities and nation – free from terrorism and evil plans.
Promote the general welfare
(Proverbs 3:5-6)
Pray for our businesses and economy – stability, growth, and new opportunities.
And secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity
(Galatians 5:1)
Pray for continued political and religious freedom. That people would exercise and stand for their rights to live, worship and assemble freely.
Do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America
(1 Timothy 2:1-2, NIV)
Pray that the government would work within the framework of the Constitution—the three branches of government, each doing what it is supposed to do: protecting basic rights. Pray for leaders that they would “faithfully execute” the duties of their offices.
